‘Ocean’ –Martin Garrix featuring Khalid Justification for choice of
song

The Dance
song I have chosen for my A-Level Media coursework music video is ‘Ocean’ by
Martin Garrix. ‘Ocean’ released in 2018 as a single. It was posted on Martin
Garrix’s YouTube Channel, who has over 10 million subscribers, on the 18th
June 2018 and has received over 154 million views. Martin Garrix has over 27
million monthly listeners and ‘Ocean’ has over 189 million downloads on
Spotify. ‘Ocean’ has been remixed by a number of upcoming DJ elevating the
popularity of the song for Martin Garrix.
The song is
3 minutes and 35 seconds, so is ideal as it surpasses the absolute minimum of 3
minutes which was proposed by the exam board. I believe the song is fitting for
the ideas which I intend to use for my own music video, which I hope will help
to juxtapose mundane adulthood against the joys of childhood and memorable
holidays. The song combines Khalid’s
soulful voice with the Electronic Dance Music that Martin Garrix has been
producing since being singed for ‘Spinnin Records’ in 2012.
Martin
Garrix and khalid have together both won an array of music awards within the short
but high achieving careers. Martin Garrix in 2017 and 2018 won the World Dance
Music award for Best DJ and Best Bass song for ‘Scared to be Lonely’ in 2018.
In 2018 Khalid earned himself five Grammy Nominations including Best New
Artist, Best Song of the Year and Best Music Video.
The pace of
the video allows swift cutting which can be mirrored by the beat of the music
to create a stronger dejected atmosphere which is my ambition for my music
video. I will use sombre footage which will be juxtaposed against old footage
to create nostalgia and optimistic tone.
