Reflection on First Draft

Upon reflecting on my first draft I made some critical changes before submitting my final version. To start off with I cut the length of my music video down. Initially the video was 31 seconds too long, this led me to cut the end of the song shorting the length of my video. I believed that cutting the length of the music was more strategic than cutting the parts of the footage which would have led to the vast proportion of the video being out of sync, as I had already edited 2:40 worth of my footage and placed to match the transition of the music which helps to deepen the impact of the narrative and the drama aspect of the music video.  I found myself in the strange position of having a song that was 31 seconds too long and not enough footage to reach the 3-minute requirement set out in the brief. This led to m having to film 30 more seconds of footage which I did successfully within a week. Within the week of additional filming I, successfully finished by second narrative and...

Success of Intertextuality

For my A-Level music video, I was aiming to make my vide intertextual to both Scott Kalvert’s 1995 American coming of age drama film ‘The Basketball Diaries’ and Stephen Frears’ 1985 British comedy-drama film ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’. My choice to pay homage to these two media texts resonated from my desire to create a challenging narrative which focused on the difficulties between the transition of childhood and adult and both the social and economic pressure that this has on many individuals within a postmodern society in Britain. My ideas to use ‘The Basketball Diaries’ as one of my leading intertextual references was owing to the strong narrative which the film is based on. The consumption of narcotics among teenagers and young adults is at a record level high since the records began in 1993. The NHS has reported that 8.5% of adults aged between 16-59 took illegal drugs in 2017 and the number of registered deaths related to drug miss use was over two and a half thousand an increa...

Statement of Intent

For my A-Level media coursework, I will use media language to construct a music video that captures the themes of self-expression, vulnerability and nostalgia. I wish to create a fair representation of adulthood contrasted against childhood within a postmodern era. To ensure that my music video appeals to my AB 16-25 demographic I intend to use two young adults who are similar ages between 16-25, one male and one female to ensure that I capture a rounded concept of mundane adult life which can be juxtaposed against previous childhood footage which explores the joys of childhood. To follow the conventions of dance music videos, I must include a range of shot types, tracking, and panning, zooming and show competent editing of my footage to create a suitable music video. I wish for my video to be intertextual, I intend to use a range of intertextual references that will pay homage to ‘The Basketball Dairies’ and ‘My Beautiful Laundrette.’  The use of old ‘...
